Replika’s troubling behavior likely stems from its training on over 100 million dialogues sourced from the web. The company states it uses crowdsourcing and classification algorithms to filter harmful data, yet the study suggests these efforts are insufficient. Call for Regulation

Namvarpour references the European Union’s EU AI Act, which categorizes AI systems based on their psychological impact risk. While the U.S. lacks a comparable federal law, emerging frameworks and proposed laws could serve similar purposes in a less comprehensive manner. Namvarpour insists that chatbots offering emotional support, particularly in mental health, should adhere to the highest standards.

‘Accountability is crucial when harm is caused,’ Namvarpour stated. ‘Marketing an AI as a therapeutic companion necessitates the same care and oversight as a human professional.’ Replika has not responded to requests for comment.
