AI Kiran: A National Movement for Inclusive AI Leadership

Introducing AI Kiran

AI Kiran, a national movement for inclusive AI leadership, has been officially launched, marking a pivotal step in empowering women in the field of Artificial Intelligence in India. This initiative sets the stage for a comprehensive effort to recognize, nurture, and promote women leaders in AI over the coming years. As India’s AI market is projected to reach $17 billion by 2027, the movement arrives at a time when unprecedented opportunities and challenges call for enhanced female participation.

Why Gender Diversity in AI Matters

Ensuring gender representation in AI goes beyond social justice—it is an economic and strategic imperative. As AI transforms sectors like governance, education, and innovation, a collaborative approach that brings together government, industry, and civil society is essential to empower women to lead this change. Despite progress in education, where women outnumber men in STEM courses, significant gender disparity remains in the AI industry. Women account for only 33% of GenAI roles at the junior level, with representation dropping to 19% at senior levels. Reports by BCG and LinkedIn Talent Insights further highlight the imbalance at the Head/Director level, with India hosting 65% more male than female GenAI professionals. Addressing this gap is crucial not only for leadership diversity but also to mitigate issues like algorithmic bias.

The Initiative Behind AI Kiran

Co-led by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Verix, and INK Women, AI Kiran is a pioneering platform designed to celebrate, elevate, and empower leading women in AI and Machine Learning across India. The initiative is set to build a robust and inclusive AI ecosystem that enables women to thrive as innovators and leaders.

Celebrating Trailblazers in Indian AI

At its launch, AI Kiran showcased over 250 prominent women redefining India’s AI landscape—working in education, healthcare, sustainability, and enterprise tech. These leaders bring vital interdisciplinary perspectives that are crucial for the responsible deployment of AI. As Lakshmi Pratury, Founder of INK and INK Women, explained, “For years, I’ve believed that when you put the mic in the hands of women, the world hears new possibilities. AI Kiran is that mic—amplifying the voices and brilliance of women who belong at the forefront of innovation.”

Sustained Engagement and Support

Between April 21 and June 5, AI Kiran will engage with corporate partners, government bodies, and donor organizations to provide ongoing support for the honorees. Key efforts include developing funding pathways to help women access the necessary resources to advance their AI careers. The recognition platform is backed by a fundraising campaign, with corporate, VC partners, and government organizations committed to donating $3 million. These funds will support large-scale summits, academic and industry partnerships, scholarships, and programs that promote women in AI on a global scale.

A Vision for the Future

AI Kiran’s long-term vision is to establish an enduring ecosystem that supports women at every stage of their AI journey. The initiative combines a vibrant membership community with access to mentorship, curated learning programs, and high-impact events, offering ample opportunities for growth and leadership. Recognitions within AI Kiran are digitally verified using Verix’s blockchain-powered credentialing platform, ensuring authenticity and global shareability. Hosted on the Manthan Platform, the movement promises accessibility to professionals, students, and researchers across India.

Global Outreach and Collaborative Momentum

Verix Co-founders Kirthiga Reddy and Saurabh Doshi emphasized the importance of building ecosystems driven by trust and recognition. Their collaboration with AI Kiran is aimed at ensuring that the women shaping India’s AI future have access to a broad network of opportunities and lasting impact pathways. As the platform expands globally to include women in AI from the Indian Diaspora, new collaborators and members are expected to join, further bolstering the momentum around inclusion, mentorship, and leadership.

Partners United in Empowerment

The movement unites partners such as 100 GIGA, Aspire For Her, NASSCOM, and others, all committed to driving empowerment through education, mentorship, and networking. By offering a digitally verified, inclusive platform, AI Kiran is not only recognizing the trailblazing spirit of women in AI but also forging a future where they lead and innovate across all sectors.
