Health education is undergoing a transformative shift with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The State College of Florida (SCF) is at the forefront of this revolution, expanding its Artificial Intelligence Sim Lab Program to two additional campuses in the Tampa Bay area. Starting this fall, students at the Venice and Bradenton locations will have access to this cutting-edge technology.

Expansion of AI Sim Lab Program

– SCF Expansion: The State College of Florida is broadening its AI Sim Lab Program, a move that underscores the institution’s commitment to innovative education.
– New Locations: The program will be available at SCF’s Venice and Bradenton campuses, offering students enhanced learning opportunities.

Innovative Learning with AI Mannequins

Stephen Brelsford, the Simulation & Nursing Communication Coordinator at SCF’s Manatee-Sarasota campus, has witnessed the positive impact of AI technology in nursing education over the past four years.

– Advanced Mannequins: These AI-driven mannequins can simulate real-life symptoms and reactions such as sweating, crying, and seizures, providing a comprehensive training experience.
– Enhanced Communication: “Between the verbal communication skills and the hands-on experiential training, I think it gives them a full perspective of what they would see in the hospital,” Brelsford stated.

Boost in Student Enrollment

The AI Sim Lab Program has proven to be a significant draw for students, with a nearly 20% increase in enrollment compared to the previous fall semester.

– Director’s Vision: Debbie Allish, Director of Simulation, emphasizes the importance of AI in enhancing student knowledge. “AI is so important for our students — especially with these mannequins — because it allows them to interact with a patient that’s more realistic,” she explained.
– Realistic Interactions: The mannequins are programmed with responses, allowing students to engage in realistic conversations, thus improving their communication skills.

Technological Innovations in Training

The AI mannequins are capable of replicating various medical scenarios, contributing to a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.

– Scenario Simulation: These mannequins can simulate conditions like seizures and demonstrate facial and bodily movements, which are critical for effective training.
– Manual and Automated Control: While the mannequins can autonomously react, faculty members can also control them manually to tailor learning experiences.

Preparing Students for the Future

The integration of AI into the curriculum is designed to increase students’ comfort and confidence in handling real-life medical situations post-graduation.

– Faculty Involvement: “The faculty sit here. Faculty kind of operate the simulators during the scenario. They evaluate the students with our camera system here,” Brelsford noted.
– Student Readiness: The goal is to ensure that students are well-prepared to interact with actual patients, equipped with both technical skills and empathy.
