Advocacy Groups Raise Red Flags Over AI Toys

Curio, which produces plush toys such as the rocket-shaped Gabbo, claims to have implemented robust safeguards and encourages parental involvement. “We design our guardrails meticulously and offer tools for parents to monitor conversations and adjust settings,” the company stated.
Similarly, Miko emphasizes the use of proprietary AI systems rather than general large language models. “We are continually enhancing our safety filters and adding capabilities to detect and block sensitive topics,” said CEO Sneh Vaswani. Miko also offers settings for caregivers to restrict specific conversation subjects and is marketed as promoting real-life social interaction.
“We encourage children to engage with peers and family, not become overly attached to the device,” added Ritvik Sharma, Miko’s senior vice president of growth.

Despite industry reassurances, experts like Dr. Suskind advocate for traditional toys that support imaginative play without technological interference. “Children need real human interaction. The most important question isn’t what a toy does, but what it replaces,” she said. “Simple toys like blocks or teddy bears encourage kids to invent stories, experiment, and solve problems on their own.”
Suskind concluded with a stark warning: “If parents ask how to prepare their children for an AI-driven future, giving them unlimited access to AI is the worst preparation possible.”
