The ongoing surge in artificial intelligence (AI) development is breathing new life into a long-standing dream: humanoid robots. At the Humanoids Summit in Mountain View, California, more than 2,000 attendees, ranging from tech executives to roboticists, gathered to explore the future of mechanical beings designed to mimic humans. Her startup, focused on giving robots a sense of touch, is still in its infancy. “The humanoid space has a very, very big hill to climb,” she said.

Even within the summit’s walls, skepticism was palpable. One frequently cited critique came from Rodney Brooks, a robotics pioneer and co-founder of iRobot. In a recent essay, he argued that today’s humanoid robots are unlikely to achieve true dexterity, regardless of the billions being invested.

Global Race and Government Support

According to consulting firm McKinsey & Company, around 50 companies worldwide have secured over $100 million each to develop humanoid robots. China leads the charge, with about 20 of those companies based there. McKinsey partner Ani Kelkar attributed this dominance to government incentives and a national objective to establish a humanoid robotics ecosystem by 2025.

Chinese firms were particularly prominent at the summit’s expo section, highlighting the country’s rapid advancements and strategic focus on robotics. In contrast, while the U.S. boasts strong AI capabilities, it lacks a unified national strategy for robot development.

By pairing AI with computer vision, researchers are developing “visual-language” models that enable robots to better understand their environments and perform tasks more intuitively. This technological synergy is propelling a new wave of startups aiming to bridge the gap between virtual intelligence and physical functionality.

Silicon Valley Reflects on Robotics’ Past and Future

The summit’s venue — just blocks from Google’s headquarters — served as a symbolic reminder of innovation’s cyclical nature. Near the museum entrance sat Google’s 2014 prototype of a self-driving car, a nod to how far autonomous technology has come. Today, Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle unit, operates passenger services in the area, suggesting that humanoids might follow a similar trajectory.

Summit organizer Modar Alaoui, who has a background in automotive technology, sees clear parallels. Like self-driving cars, humanoid robots may take years to reach maturity but could eventually transform how we live and work.

Calls for a U.S. Robotics Strategy

Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation, is urging the U.S. government to develop a comprehensive national robotics strategy. “We have a lot of strong technology, we have the AI expertise here in the U.S.,” he said. “So I think it remains to be seen who is the ultimate leader in this. But right now, China has certainly a lot more momentum on humanoids.”

Burnstein and others believe that with the right support, American companies could regain the lead and shape the future of robotics in a sustainable and competitive way.
