With the World Economic Forum reporting that automation and AI could create 97 million new jobs in industries such as data analysis, AI development, and content creation by 2025, Philadelphia, PA-based Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) has announced a one-day intensive course for scientists and applied mathematicians looking to expand their expertise or transition their career into AI.
Professor Randy C. Paffenroth of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts will lead a one-day course collocated with the SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Data Science. The course, entitled From Machine Learning to Large Language Models, will take place on October 20 in Atlanta.
“This workshop provides an excellent opportunity for participants to deepen their knowledge and hands-on experience in the rapidly evolving fields of machine learning and artificial intelligence,” said Paffenroth, who specializes in the mathematical sciences, data science, and computer science, and was previously a computational scientist and program director for a defense contractor.
Paffenroth’s research spans machine learning, signal processing, large-scale data analytics, and compressed sensing, with applications in cyber-defense, chemical sensor processing, finance, and materials science. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Army NSRDEC, Nanocomp Corporation, MITRE Corporation, BBN/Raytheon, and others.
Geared for those both looking to expand their expertise or transition their career into AI, this workshop will help attendees upskill and gain a deeper understanding of machine learning technologies and how to apply them in any given field by:
· Learning to set up and cross-validate machine learning models
· Demystifying Large Language Models (LLMs) and running a local LLM
· Using PyTorch for deep learning tasks
· Understanding models, weights, and fine-tuning models on Google Colab
Early bird registration for the From Machine Learning to Large Language Models course and the SIAM Conference on Mathematics of Data Science ends September 18. For more information and to register, visit the SIAM website.
