Montgomery County Launches Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence for Public Good

Council Composition and Objectives

Montgomery County has taken a pioneering step in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its public sector by announcing the formation of a new Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence for Public Good. This initiative, spearheaded by the Montgomery County Commissioners, aims to foster innovation in government while ensuring that technology is utilized in a responsible and ethical manner.

The Advisory Council will comprise 7-15 experts drawn from diverse fields including academia, private sector, public service, and nonprofit organizations. Their primary mandate is to provide guidance to Montgomery County in deploying AI technologies that enhance public services. The focus is on improving service delivery, optimizing data-driven decision-making, and implementing trustworthy technology solutions.

Neil K. Makhija, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, emphasized the potential of AI to address local challenges. “The rapid development of AI has the potential to help us solve problems and better serve Montgomery County residents,” Makhija stated. He highlighted AI’s role in preparing for natural disasters, alleviating traffic congestion, and streamlining government processes—while stressing the importance of ethics, transparency, and public trust.

Strategic Focus Areas

The Council will work alongside an inter-departmental group of County employees dedicated to implementing AI strategies across five strategic focus areas:

  • Smart Governance
  • Finance and Procurement
  • Public Safety
  • Health and Human Services
  • Legal, Ethical, and Regulatory Compliance

These focus areas are chosen to ensure comprehensive engagement with AI, spotlighting public engagement, equitable service delivery, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Leadership Insights

Jamila H. Winder, Vice Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, praised this move as a forward-thinking strategy. “We want Montgomery County to be not just reactive, but forward-looking,” Winder explained, reinforcing the county’s commitment to innovation grounded in public trust and responsibility.

Commissioner Tom DiBello echoed this sentiment, stating, “Taxpayers expect their government to operate transparently and with a clear purpose.” With a background in technology, DiBello supports the creation of the Advisory Council as a crucial step in keeping pace with rapid technological advancements. He expressed confidence that the Council will ensure AI technologies are leveraged for public benefit in a responsible way.
