Drones as First Responders Revolutionize Response Times

With a modest force of around 85 officers, Redmond’s department now includes two full-time drone pilots who operate from a central flight control hub. Using autonomous drones from local companies like Brinc and Skydio, the department can dispatch drones directly from the 911 system. These drones are capable of reaching a scene in under two minutes.

In one recent case, a drone responded to a report of a man in the midst of a mental health crisis. From 250 feet in the air, the drone’s pilot observed that the individual posed no threat and was not committing a crime. Redmond PD’s tech adoption is not new. Prior initiatives have included GPS trackers that can be deployed on suspect vehicles and handheld analyzers capable of identifying more than 530 controlled substances — including fentanyl and methamphetamine — through transparent packaging.

These tools have helped officers work more safely and efficiently, especially in high-risk situations or when immediate identification is necessary.

License Plate Readers Face Political Roadblocks

Not all technologies have had smooth implementations. Earlier this year, the city council halted the department’s use of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) amid growing concerns about data sharing and potential misuse by federal agencies like ICE.

The ALPR system was designed to alert police to vehicles connected to crimes, missing persons, or stolen property. Lowe defended the program, arguing that there is “no expectation of privacy in a public place on a tax-funded road.” He pointed out that tolling cameras often collect more detailed, long-term data than his department’s ALPRs.

Since the city had already signed a contract to implement the technology, Lowe noted that any decision to abandon the system could have legal and financial repercussions.
