These schemes are not isolated. The U.S. Justice Department has exposed networks where North Korean nationals use AI-crafted identities to obtain remote jobs in the United States. These roles in U.S.-based companies help fund the North Korean Ministry of Defense and its nuclear programs. The department estimates that these fraudulent activities generate hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
Vidoc’s experience mirrors several such schemes mentioned by Justice Department researchers, though Moczadlo’s case remains under investigation. He warned that companies without security expertise, especially those with standard hiring managers or entrepreneurs, face challenges in detecting such scams.
