“Pentagon’s CARCOSA Project Resonates with “True Detective” Narrative, Prompting Debate”
With the goal of minimizing soldiers’ cognitive load through the reduction of information overload, the Pentagon is developing a high-tech program named “CARCOSA”. Like “the temple” in the first season of the HBO TV series “True Detective,” where an elite pedophile ring abuses children ritualistically, the $40 million-plus classified program has the same name.
There is no proof that the military’s CARCOSA is connected to these kinds of operations, even with this similar name. CARCOSA is an artificial intelligence (AI) aggregator designed to gather, organize, and present data pertaining to events occurring on a rapidly evolving battlefield in the future. This program, which is managed by DARPA, aims to use cyber technologies to give war fighters improved situational awareness of their current battlespace.

Through the provision of tactical and technical guidance on both offensive and defensive cyberspace and electronic warfare activities, the program provides Army mission areas known as Cyberspace and Electromagnetic Activities (CEMA) to combat commanders. By funding the creation of tools to help soldiers and commanders comprehend the deluge of information on the contemporary battlefield, including diverse intelligence inputs and electronic attacks, CARCOSA will contribute to reducing the cognitive load on tactical cyber operators.
