Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC), a titan in the global semiconductor landscape, stands at the forefront of a transformative era in chip production. As the leading force with a commanding 67% share of the third-party foundry market, TSMC’s dominance overshadows rivals like Samsung, which holds a mere 11% of this space. With the semiconductor industry rapidly evolving, TSMC’s market share growth from 58% to 67% indicates its rising influence.

AI Chips: The Catalyst for TSMC’s Growth

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) chips is set to propel TSMC’s growth trajectory. TSMC’s cutting-edge processing nodes are integral to AI-capable chips utilized by tech giants such as Nvidia, Broadcom, Marvell, AMD, and Apple. These chips are essential for powering data centers, personal computers, and smartphones, positioning TSMC at the heart of AI’s expanding reach across diverse sectors.

According to projections, the global AI chip market is anticipated to experience an annual growth rate of 35% through 2033. TSMC forecasts even more impressive growth, with revenue from AI accelerators designed by key players like Nvidia and AMD expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate in the mid-40% range over the next five years.

Proliferation of AI in Various Sectors

AI integration in technologies such as smartphones, PCs, vehicles, and the Internet of Things (IoT) further underscores TSMC’s growth potential. Market research indicates that shipments of generative AI smartphones and PCs are predicted to grow at a compound annual rate of 35% through 2029. Similarly, AI deployment in the automotive sector is expected to follow a comparable growth trajectory.

In response to the burgeoning demand for AI-driven semiconductors, TSMC is making significant investments to enhance its manufacturing and packaging capabilities. The company plans to invest $165 billion in the U.S. to establish advanced chip fabrication facilities, packaging plants, and a research and development center. Additionally, TSMC is set to construct 24 new factories globally, reinforcing its dominant position in the foundry market.

Potential for Stock Value Tripling

Last year, TSMC’s management highlighted the total addressable market (TAM) under the Foundry 2.0 definition, which encompasses packaging, testing, and assembly, alongside chip manufacturing. This market is estimated at $247.5 billion. Research firm IDC predicts that the Foundry 2.0 market will grow by 11% in 2025, reaching $298 billion in revenue. TSMC’s share of this market is projected to increase to 37% in 2025, a notable rise from the previous year’s 28%.

Looking forward, IDC forecasts a 10% compound annual growth rate for the Foundry 2.0 market through 2029, potentially elevating annual revenue to $436 billion. TSMC’s aggressive capacity expansion and technological superiority could enable it to capture a larger market share, potentially reaching 60% in five years. Such growth would elevate TSMC’s annual revenue to $262 billion, nearly tripling its 2024 revenue figures.

Currently, TSMC’s stock trades at approximately 11 times sales. Should it maintain a slightly higher sales multiple in five years, the company’s market cap could surpass $3 trillion. Given the anticipated acceleration in sales growth over the next five years, the market may reward TSMC with a premium valuation.
