Fireside Chat on AI & Society: Exploring the Past, Present, and Future of Artificial Intelligence

In a recent installment of the Tata Knowledge Series on AI & Society, the past, present, and future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) were explored by prominent figures in the field, as they discussed AI’s transformative power. The discussion was part of a fireside chat featuring renowned computer scientist Alok Aggarwal, PhD, CEO and Chief Data Scientist of Scry AI, and Nick Dirks, President and CEO of The New York Academy of Sciences.

The event, which took place in April 2025, brought to light the significant implications of AI on society and its potential to transform numerous aspects of life. Dr. Aggarwal, who founded Scry AI in 2014, shared insights from his recent publication, “The Fourth Industrial Revolution & 100 Years of AI (1950-2050),” which aims to demystify AI for the general public. His book argues that AI is a central component of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which began in 2011 and is expected to continue through 2050.

The Power of AI in Business

During the conversation, Dirk moved the discussion towards the impact of AI on the business world. Dr. Aggarwal emphasized the enormous potential of AI in pattern recognition tasks, which can significantly enhance human capabilities. “That pattern-recognition aspect is much faster,” Dr. Aggarwal noted, highlighting how it could revolutionize nearly all areas of business and beyond.

Dr. Aggarwal drew parallels between the current evolution of AI and the public’s acceptance of the internet in the late 1990s, illustrating that the concept of AI becoming commonplace is not a question of “if,” but “when.” He spoke about the “hype” around AI, stating, “Hype is very good… because it leads to monetary support and makes the passionate inventors even more passionate.”

A significant part of the discussion centered on the challenges AI faces today, such as driverless car technology. While companies like Google have faced setbacks, AI continues to show great promise in more incrementally impactful applications, such as healthcare diagnostics and automating routine tasks.

Dirks also highlighted the challenge of curating accurate AI training sets, as many rely on diverse, sometimes inaccurate online sources. Dr. Aggarwal referred to this as the “human mirror” effect, where AI reflects human biases present in its training data. “It’s no different from how we train our children,” he explained, stressing the importance of responsible AI training.

He cited historical figures like Alan Turing and his “imitation game” as an inspiration but urged for diligence to ensure AI systems are balanced and well-informed. Ensuring the responsible development and use of AI will require ongoing efforts to curb biases and misinformation.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Discussions

The chat not only covered the immediate impact of AI but also delved into broader themes, such as the history and evolution of neural networks, the origin of the term “artificial intelligence,” and the concept of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Attendees were encouraged to engage in the discussion, highlighting the industry’s need for both public engagement and feedback.
