South West Water (SWW) has reported promising results from a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) trial designed to detect sewer blockages before they cause pollution. The utility company, serving areas including Devon, Cornwall, and parts of Dorset and Somerset, said that the innovative use of AI has already helped prevent around 200 pollution incidents.

By analyzing data from over 12,000 sensors embedded within its sewer network, the AI system monitors fluctuations in water levels. These variations can point to potential blockages forming in the pipes, enabling early intervention. Helen Dobby, head of environmental performance at SWW, remarked, “The system gives us an extra 12,000 pairs of eyes on our network”, underscoring the enhanced monitoring capabilities the technology provides.

Using AI to Improve Environmental Performance

This plan aims to improve the company’s environmental ratings following a “requires improvement” assessment by Ofwat, the UK’s water industry regulator. “We’ve already seen a reduction in pollution events,” Dobby noted. “This is fundamental to seeing our performance improve.” The program complements a much larger capital investment initiative totaling £760 million, aimed at reducing storm overflows and bolstering wastewater management systems.

AI Analyzes CCTV Footage for Faster Detection

In addition to monitoring sensor data, the AI is also used to process hours of CCTV footage taken from within the sewer system. This footage is typically reviewed manually by field surveyors, often under challenging conditions. Now, AI is trained to recognize signs of damage or blockages in the sewer infrastructure, enabling faster and more efficient analysis.

Joshua Myrans, a data scientist at SWW and one of the project leads, explained, “The AI is trained on images labeled by humans. It frees up operatives to survey more of the network, helping to identify and fix problems before they escalate.” Myrans began exploring AI applications in sewer management during his PhD studies and has since played a crucial role in the development of the system.

Expert Collaboration Enhances Project Success

The University of Exeter has been a key partner in the initiative, with Professor Richard Everson, a machine learning expert, highlighting the broader implications of the trial. “Widespread environmental monitoring with AI will allow us to better understand and manage our natural systems,” he said. He emphasized the significant time savings and accuracy benefits the technology offers over traditional methods.

Everson also pointed out the laborious nature of current practices: “At the moment, it relies on humans doing the tedious job of reviewing CCTV, usually in the back of a van in less-than-ideal conditions. AI can handle these tasks more efficiently and consistently.”

Public Awareness and Behavioral Change

While technology plays a vital role, human behavior remains a critical factor in sewer blockages. Peter Corps, a catchment operator with 12 years of experience at SWW, stressed the importance of public awareness. “Grease, fat, and wet wipes are common culprits. Much of the problem comes from what people flush down the toilet or pour down the sink,” he said.

Corps urged residents to adopt responsible disposal habits, using the mantra “Bin it, don’t flush it.” He explained that while some issues stem from infrastructure problems, a significant majority are caused by inappropriate waste disposal.

Continued Efforts to Improve Ratings

Despite the AI project’s early success, SWW acknowledges that more work is needed. The company was recently given a two-star rating out of four for environmental performance. “Two stars is not where we want to be,” admitted Dobby. “We’re ramping up training for new wastewater operatives and making the biggest capital investment in our history.”

The AI trial is expected to be a cornerstone in the company’s long-term strategy for environmental improvement and customer service enhancement. As the technology matures, it may be rolled out more extensively across the network, contributing to SWW’s goal of delivering cleaner, safer water services.
