In a significant revelation, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has projected a future where AI will play a central role in writing code for the company’s ambitious Llama project. Speaking on a podcast with Dwarkesh Patel, Zuckerberg highlighted that within the next 12 to 18 months, artificial intelligence will not just assist in coding but will independently handle tasks such as running tests, finding bugs, and writing high-quality code.
Zuckerberg explained that AI has already reached the level of an ‘average very good person’ in a team, but soon it will surpass even the top coders. He elaborated on the current capabilities of AI, which are adept at auto-completing sections of code. However, the future he envisions involves AI executing comprehensive tasks that go beyond just completion.
“I think sometime in the next 12 to 18 months, we will reach the point where most of these codes that are going towards these efforts will be written by AI. And I don’t mean like autocomplete. Today, you have good autocomplete, where if you start writing, it [AI] can complete that section of the code. I mean, if you give it a goal, it can run tests, it can find issues, it will write higher quality code than an average very good person on the team already,” said Zuckerberg.
AI Integration in Meta’s Tool Chain
Zuckerberg emphasized that AI is ‘fully plugged into our tool chain,’ and Meta is focusing on building a coding agent and an AI research agent. These developments are specifically tailored to advance the Llama project.
“We are working on a number of coding agents inside Meta, because we are not really an enterprise software company, we are primarily building it for ourselves. So, we are making it for a specific goal. We are not trying to build a general developer tool, we are trying to build a coding agent and an AI research agent that basically advances Llama research specifically. It is fully plugged into our tool chain. I think that’s important. And it is going to end up being an important part of how stuff gets done,” Zuckerberg added.
Industry-Wide Shift Towards AI in Coding
The shift towards AI in coding is not limited to Meta. This trend is echoed by industry leaders across the tech world. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently predicted that within the next three to six months, AI will generate 90 percent of the code, and by the end of 2025, all code will be generated by AI.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai also revealed that 25 percent of Google’s code is already written by AI. Meanwhile, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman claims that AI is generating 50 percent of the code in some companies. This increasing reliance on AI for coding marks a significant transformation in software development practices.
A New Era of Software Development
Zuckerberg’s vision aligns with a broader industry trend where AI’s role in coding is expanding rapidly. The potential for AI to independently handle complex coding tasks could revolutionize how software is developed and maintained.
This shift is expected to not only enhance efficiency but also elevate the quality of code, as AI systems become more adept at identifying and rectifying issues. The implications of this technological evolution could lead to significant advancements in various sectors reliant on software development.
As AI continues to evolve and integrate into the core operations of tech giants like Meta, the industry is on the brink of a new era where AI-driven coding becomes the norm rather than the exception.
