Kerala has introduced “Iris”, the first generative AI teacher last month at the KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram. This innovative project involves collaboration between technologists, educators, and AI experts, focusing on integrating artificial intelligence to enhance educational experiences.
Iris can speak three languages and also answer difficult questions, along with features including being a voice assistant and helping students with interactive learning, manipulation capabilities, and mobilities.
As Artificial Intelligence technology has grown tremendously in the past few years touching all the aspects of our lives, it is also important to enhance its usage in the field of education. Hence, in the process of making AI-assisted learning fun and easy, the humanoid named Iris was unveiled last month at KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram in collaboration with Makerlabs Edutech Private Limited. According to Makerlabs, Iris was built as part of the Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), a 2021 NITI Aayog project to boost students’ extracurricular activities in schools.
Makerlabs highlights Iris as a revolutionary voice assistant, uniquely crafted to enhance learning environments, from classrooms to DIY projects. This innovation harnesses Robotics and Generative AI, positioning Iris as a dynamic educational companion with extensive interactive features. It operates on a robust Intel processor, supplemented by a coprocessor dedicated to task management, ensuring swift, reliable functionality. Additionally, Iris is accessible via an Android app, simplifying user interaction for a tailored educational journey. This blend of advanced technology and user-friendly design marks a significant leap in interactive learning tools.

They aim to leverage AI’s capabilities to offer a customized learning journey, uniquely adapting to each learner’s individual needs and preferences. This approach allows IRIS to assist educators in crafting more engaging and effective lessons, enriching the educational experience in ways previously unimagined.
