South Texas College (STC) is preparing to launch a pioneering Associate of Applied Science in Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the fall of 2026. This innovative program aims to address the rising demand for AI expertise in the region’s ever-evolving job market.

The new degree is being developed by STC’s Cybersecurity program, with input from local industry partners to ensure alignment with real-world workforce requirements. According to Francisco Salinas, Cybersecurity Assistant Professor and Department Chair, this degree will give students the tools, hands-on experience, and certifications needed to thrive in the modern workplace.

Program Designed from the Ground Up

“There are no templates for AI in the workforce catalog, so we designed every course from scratch based on industry needs,” said Salinas. “Our goal is to equip students with practical skills that directly translate into employability across sectors.”

From healthcare and manufacturing to IT and cybersecurity, AI knowledge is becoming indispensable. The AI associate degree is being tailored to provide students with the essential competencies to meet this growing demand.

Flexible Learning Options

STC’s AI program will offer two academic tracks for students: a one-year certificate totaling 16-30 credits and a comprehensive 60-credit associate degree. The certificate acts as the foundational first year of the associate degree, allowing students to continue seamlessly into the second year without credit loss.

“If you don’t get on board with AI, you’re going to be left behind,” emphasized Salinas. “Whether you go into healthcare, IT, cybersecurity, or manufacturing, AI is fast becoming a core requirement.”

Curriculum Built for the Future

The curriculum will cover a wide range of in-demand subjects such as machine learning, Python programming, operating systems, and database integration. While Python is already part of the cybersecurity curriculum, the AI program will focus on applying programming skills to develop intelligent systems and robotics.

Dirce Hernandez, a cybersecurity expert and current adjunct faculty member at STC, is expected to transition into a full-time role within the AI program. “My background will always be cybersecurity, but I’m excited to contribute to this innovative AI curriculum,” said Hernandez.

Industry Certifications and Partnerships

To ensure students are job-ready, STC is exploring partnerships with major tech companies like Intel and Google. These collaborations aim to incorporate industry-recognized certifications into the program. Certifications from these global leaders serve as external validation of a student’s skills and are highly valued by employers.

“When students earn Google or Intel certifications, industry leaders recognize their abilities,” Salinas noted. These certifications will give students a competitive edge in the job market.

Pathways to Higher Education

Although the AI associate degree is technical in nature and may not transfer easily to traditional university programs, STC has built a robust academic pathway within its own institution. Students can transition into the college’s Bachelor of Applied Technology in Computer Information Technology (BAT-CIT) without losing any credits, similar to the existing cybersecurity track.

This seamless transition ensures students can continue their education and deepen their expertise in advanced computing technologies.

Meeting Regional Workforce Demands

STC’s initiative is seen as a timely response to the increasing integration of AI across all sectors. Industry leaders believe that students who develop AI skills will be better positioned to succeed in a competitive job market.

“AI is already becoming a minimum requirement in job descriptions,” said Hernandez. “Students who ignore it will struggle to compete. The smart students will use AI to enhance their skills and become more attractive to employers.”

Salinas echoed this sentiment, stating, “It doesn’t matter if you embrace AI or not because industries already expect you to know it.”
