Huawei Cloud: AI Model Delivers Faster, Precise Weather Forecasts

Chinese cloud company Huawei has developed an AI-based global weather algorithm called Pangu-Weather.

Pangu-Weather produces faster and more accurate weather forecasts than traditional methods.

The model can provide forecasts in seconds, including humidity, wind speed, temperature, sea level pressure, and disaster warnings.

Pangu-Weather is 10,000 times faster than the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model.

It focuses on medium-range forecasting, which plays a crucial role in disaster prevention.

AI-based forecasting has been inferior to numerical weather prediction until now but has shown significant improvements with Pangu-Weather.

The model uses new computational strategies and adapts to handle complex and uneven 3D weather data.

It was trained using 100 epochs of hourly weather data from 1979 to 2021.

Pangu-Weather can complete 24-hour global weather forecasts in just 1.4 seconds on a single graphics card.

The model has demonstrated high accuracy in tracking named tropical cyclones and successfully forecasted the path of Typhoon Mawar.
